I didn't realize the stories were supposed to be geared for beginners or I would have written it in the present tense and simplified it considerably. Apparently, it is a lot more difficult to teach something than it is to sit and absorb it.

He lived in a tent, he washed little and worked hard, but life was good. Only, he was afraid of bears.
One night while he was sleeping a terrifying sound approached the tent, waking him up. He was frightened out of his wits, and said: 'Scram! Shoo!'
In the morning, when he got up, friends said, 'That was a porcupine!'
