Heard the old canard about how people learn to detect counterfeits by studying the real thing (the point being that Christians should stay away from secular things and study only the truth of Scripture)? It's a myth.

This is that slippery slope argument. If you read secular authority you'll end up discarding the Bible . . .
A while back in church we discussed creationism/evolution. Intelligent design was put down for it's synthesis with evolution . . . But then I read George Marsden's Fundamentalism and American Culture and he points out that creationism has an underlying philosophy of Francis Bacon.
It's that Tertullian quote, "What does Jerusalem have to do with Athens?"
